Welcome to Sheffield Institute of Artsby Sally Wade, director
Sheffield is home to the UK's largest practising community of artists and designers outside London, bringing a constant flow of creative energy and activity. Our institute is an integral part of this vibrant and creative city.
We opened our doors in 1843 to supply creative support to the region's manufacturers, in a bid to stay ahead of the growing global competition.
This relationship with the commercial and industrial continues today. Our students enjoy superb access to the working world and the community of experts they will emerge into.
Our links with industry support this - product designers, developers, filmmakers, fashion designers create in the real world, through internships and placements.
That might be working with our commercial packaging design consultancy, Design Futures, on a project for Panasonic. Or it could be working with fellow students on a live project for Gillette.
Studying with us isn't just about accessing our expertise and facilities. It's about joining our community. An amazing, diverse community of makers - where staff, students and partners work as equals to deliver real innovation and creativity.
Your tutors are experienced, inspirational practitioners, teachers and researchers, who have established a safe environment where you can explore, experiment and develop your own creative approaches.
You'll be challenged to take risks, to understand and solve complex problems and in turn, develop the confidence to challenge individual and societal norms.
Because of all this, we have really successful students and staff. They make a difference - winning awards, developing innovative products and services and engaging in groundbreaking research.
We're in the top 2 modern universities in the UK for art and design research, with 81% ranked internationally excellent or world leading in the national 2014 Research Excellence Framework.
As part of our creative community you will be encouraged to share in these experiences as you develop your own practice.
You'll find your own path, but we hope you'll feel inspired to come and visit us in Sheffield, see for yourself and join us.
