Background

Chris Sammon graduated from Hull with a BSc in Chemistry (1992) and an MSc in Analytical Science (1993). Having worked for a year as an analytical chemist for Yorkshire Water, he moved back into academia to complete a PhD in polymer spectroscopy at SHU (1997). He currently works as a Principal Research Fellow and runs a group with interests in regenerative medicine, controlled release and stimuli responsive polymers. He is an elected member of the MacroGroup UK, Infrared and Raman Discussion Group, RSC Biomaterials Chemistry Group, was Chair of the Recent Appointees in Polymer Science (2004-2008) and is a member of the EPSRC College.

Current projects

His current projects involve (i) the application of MIR imaging to understand sustained release from polymeric microparticles (EPSRC EP/I501665/1), (ii) the applications of cross-linked hydrogels as cell scaffolds, (iii) monitoring the effects of gamma irradiation on pharmaceutical materials, (iv) The use of Raman microscopy to monitor hair damage and (v) the application of electrospun polymer materials to regenerate the intervertebral disc (IVD) (http://www.npmimetic.com/).
