Background 

Dr Alessandro Di Nuovo received the Laurea (cum laude) and Ph.D. degrees in informatics engineering from the University of Catania, Italy, in 2005 and 2009, respectively. His PhD Thesis title was: Computational Intelligence for Design Optimization of Embedded Computer Systems.
 
He is Fellow of the HEA and Senior Member of the IEEE.
 
Before joining Sheffield Hallam University, he has been appointed as Assistant Professor of Computer Science from University of Enna Kore (Italy) from 2012. He has also been Research Fellow with Plymouth University (UK), from January 2012 to November 2015. Previously, he was Associate Lecturer at the University of Enna ‘Kore’ (Italy), from 2008 to 2010, and Research Associate with University of Catania (Italy) in 2011.
 
His research specializes in computational intelligence and its application to cognitive modelling, human-robot interaction and multimodal interfaces for special users (elderly, children with autism), computer-aided assessment of intellectual disabilities, and embedded computer systems. He is author and co-author of over 60 scientific articles published in well-reputed journals and renowned conferences. For his research in cognitive robotics In 2014, he won the Best Paper Award by AISC (Italian Association for Cognitive Sciences).
 
He has been involved many European research projects and networks, among them the FP7 ITALK, ROBOTERA, ROBOTDOC ITN, and EUCog II/III.
 
He is member of organizing and technical committees of several international renowned conferences (e.g. IJCNN, IEEE SMC, IEEE WCCI, FUZZIEEE) and guest editor for well-reputed journals (e.g. Adaptive Behaviour, International Journal of Social Robotics, IEEE Transactions on Cognitive and Developmental Systems).
