Sheffield Hallam University has been named the first Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) Centre of Excellence.

The accolade comes in recognition of the high standards of the teaching staff and resources on the University's architectural technology courses.

CIAT is the industry body which represents professionals working and studying in the field of architectural technology.

The recognition, the first of its kind in the country, will see the two organisations working together to advance the subject of architectural technology.

This will include opportunities for research projects between University academics and industry professionals, as well as increased links for students with industry.

There are also plans to create stronger relationships with University alumni in order to better share experience and expertise with current students.

Andrew Wilson, lecturer in architecture at Sheffield Hallam, said: "This status within the sector provides us with welcome opportunities to raise our profile and extend our links to CIAT and other industry professionals.

"We will continue to seek ways to access the most relevant industry expertise and support architectural technology's professional body."

CIAT said: “The University has demonstrated a gold standard in terms of teaching staff and resources, commitment to the promotion of CIAT and to the promotion of scholarly activity.”
