In response to a number of alleged racist incidents affecting Sheffield Hallam University students, we want to update and reassure students and staff of the actions being taken.

The welfare and safety of our students is our top priority. We pride ourselves on being a diverse, welcoming and supportive University for all our students. Racism and hate speech will not be tolerated in any form in our University community.

The recent incidents that have taken place involving our students are in the process of being thoroughly investigated and all possible action will be taken to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

We take any incident regarding racism, hate speech or other abusive acts extremely seriously. If you are aware of any such incidents we would ask you to report it immediately.

We have many initiatives, training and resources in place for our students, staff and partners to raise awareness of the issues of racism and promote inclusivity and equality in our community. We will continue to work with the Students' Union to ensure this remains a key priority for us all.

In response to the specific recent incidents, we can confirm that:

Ice Hockey Varsity incident- following an investigation by the University of Sheffield a student has accepted responsibility for the impact of their actions and has apologised. The student will also be completing volunteering work within the community and issuing a written apology.

Library incident 1: racist phrases written on whiteboard- following an investigation into the writing of hateful racist language on a University whiteboard in the Library, it has unfortunately not been possible to identify the perpetrators as this location is not covered by security cameras. Although the whiteboard has been used successfully to gather student feedback for many years, due to this and further misuse, it has now been removed from the Library.

Library incidents 2 & 3: alleged racist comments made to students- following two incidents involving alleged comments by externally contracted security in University Libraries, a full investigation has been launched, which is ongoing.

Further updates will be made as information becomes available.
