Issued:13/03/12

SkillsActive, the Sector Skills Council for Active Leisure, Learning and Wellbeing, has officially recognised Sheffield Hallam University's children and playwork undergraduate degree as giving students the right knowledge and experience to succeed.

The skills council awarded the University's BA (Hons) Children and Playwork degree with Higher Education Endorsement, highlighting it as meeting national standards.

Acting course leader, Julia Sexton, said: "We're delighted to achieve SkillsActive Higher Education Endorsement, as it demonstrates that the children and playwork degree provides current and relevant knowledge and experience to help students in becoming employable graduates.

"In a climate of rising fees and high expectations this endorsement should reassure potential students, parents and employers of the value of undertaking this degree. Endorsed courses are actively supported and promoted to employers by the Sector Skills Council."

Children and playwork studies help those who work with children and young people in playful and creative ways, and teach students about the significant benefits of play and related activities that affect a child’s life. The degree course can also help experienced practitioners develop their skills further before they move into management or training roles.

Playworkers contribute to children’s services in many ways. These include community and area-based services, children’s rights and participation, out-of-school provision, therapeutic playwork, adventure and environmental play.
