A team of Sheffield Hallam University students have secured their best ever performance in an international motorsport competition.

SHU Racing, a team of around 40 students, took part in Formula Student - an annual competition which sees more than 3,000 students from over 80 universities from around the world build their own racing car to compete with each other at the home of UK motorsport, Silverstone.

The team, which is made up engineering students from  first year up to Masters, finished 39th out of 81 competing teams and, for the first time in the team's history, they also completed scrutineering on the Friday of the event, as well as raced the car in all dyanmic events, such as design judging and testing.

The Formula Student competition is run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and aims to inspire and develop young engineers.

Universities from across the globe are challenged to design and build a single-seat racing car which is judged for its racing performance, design and the strength of the teams' business models.

Samuel Seabrooke, SHU Racing team leader and Masters student, said: "We are thrilled to have had our most successful Formula Student yet. The team is made up of all years and course types, including nine MEng Masters students for whom Formula Student counts as their group project - so it's not just an extra-curricular activity.

"The team will continue to grow and improve and hopefully we'll be even more successful next year. Formula Student is a huge advantage to students from any course and year, with employers actively looking for students with this sort of experience”
