Maddy is an expert on health psychology and behaviour change, including how best to promote healthy lifestyles and adherence to medical treatment and advice.  Her research investigates the factors that affect people's health behaviours. Maddy develops interventions to promote changes in behaviours that improve people's health and decrease the chances of developing poor health in the future. She has published extensively in national and international academic journals. 

Professor Arden's areas of expertise include:

  • Adherence to medication (particularly in cystic fibrosis)
  • Obesity and weight management in pregnancy and postnatally
  • Reducing alcohol consumption
  • Increasing healthy lifestyles (diet, physical activity)
  • Theories of health behaviour and behaviour change
  • Evaluation of behaviour change/healthy lifestyle interventions
  • Habits and health behaviours
  • Supporting and enabling health professionals to change their practice
  • Upper limb prosthetics

Professor Arden recently appeared on BBC Look North, the BBC News website and the Yorkshire Times, to discuss the Wellcome-Trust funded Virtual Reality Prosthetics project, which explores the lives of amputees.
