Charmaine is Professor of Clinical Science and is an expert in critical illness and human trauma, specifically paediatric burn injuries and traumatic brain injury in adults.

Professor Childs is undertaking innovative research in a number of fields, including using infra-red thermal imaging for wound assessment after surgery and retinal imaging after mild brain injury. Charmaine is also an executive member and director of operations for South Yorkshire Institute for Innovation and Research in Child Health.
