Sheffield Hallam University is hosting a series of events, including a free community day, to celebrate science week which gets underway on Friday (March 8).

The diverse programme of talks, masterclasses and other events will take place throughout the week, with sessions led by experts to inspire and entertain children, young people and adults.

As well as a week of events held at the University, led by our academic experts, there will also be sessions available in schools and colleges.

Highlights include Explore!; our popular interactive family afternoon to celebrate science week with a range of hands-on activities, talks, demonstrations and more. Delivered by University staff and students, there will be plenty to capture the imaginations of curious minds of all ages.

There will also be a series of mini-talks, focused on our leading research in biology, chemistry, forensic science, engineering and health. The whole day of events will be family friendly and completely free and there's no need to book.

Another highlight will be our Laughter Hours event; featuring bitesize lectures from leading academics across the University, the evening will explore Sheffield Hallam's pioneering research in science, technology and engineering.

This whistle-stop tour of some of Sheffield Hallam's most exciting research will be supported by The Antics - resident improvisation troupe at Sheffield's Montgomery Theatre.

This is the second year the University has planned a programme of events to celebrate British Science Week, led by the Schools and Colleges Engagement Team.

Jack Ridley, senior schools and colleges engagement officer for science, technology and arts, said: "Science Week at Sheffield Hallam University is a celebration of all things scientific. Covering everything from biosciences and chemistry to engineering and computing, we have developed a week of fun, free activities designed to engage and enthral audiences of all ages.

"Linking to British Science Week, the programme is packed with interactive masterclasses, inspiring talks, and hands-on exhibitions, all developed and delivered by academics who are experts in their fields.

"Sheffield Hallam is committed to connecting with the community and so the Science Week programme will not only take place on University campuses, but also in primary and secondary schools and colleges across the Sheffield City Region.

"We want to share our passion for innovation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) with as many people as possible, and inspire a new generation to tackle the challenges of our age and make a real difference to the world around them.

The University programme forms part of a wider plan of events in Sheffield to mark British Science Week. The University of Sheffield is set to host a Discovery Night on Friday 15 March, with talks, activities and demonstrations for the whole family, from science, engineering, medicine and dentistry.

The vast majority of the events are free; many are ticketed to monitor attendance numbers. Information on all our events and booking your place can be found at:
