Sheffield Hallam University's hospitality courses have been ranked in the top five in the country and in the top 50 worldwide.

The University features in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject which identifies the world's strongest universities in 46 individual subject areas.

Sheffield Hallam has been ranked 5th in the UK and 32nd in the world as a provider of hospitality and leisure management studies.

Hospitality and leisure management is one of four new subjects that have been added to this year’s QS subject rankings.

Rankings are based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact.

Dr Emma Martin, head of the department of Service Sector Management in the Sheffield Business School, said: "We are delighted to feature so highly in the QS World University Rankings.

"A number of the institutions in the worldwide top 50 are specialist providers which makes our position even more of an achievement.

"It is a testament to the excellent programmes, dedicated staff and impressive facilities on offer here at Sheffield Hallam."

The University recently invested £3.5 million in state-of-the-art kitchen facilities used by hospitality and nutrition students. The facility includes a purpose-built restaurant kitchen, student training facilities, a presentation suite and product development areas.

The QS rankings are the second honour Hallam's hospitality courses have received in recent weeks.

Last month undergraduate hospitality and tourism courses retained the EPAS Accreditation Award from the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) in recognition of their quality.

The courses were accredited for five years and Sheffield Hallam is one of only three institutions worldwide to achieve this.
