Labour politician and cabinet member John Denham will explore English identity, democracy and governance at Sheffield Hallam University this week.

The former Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government will address a number of issues in his lecture including the strengthening of the English identity, local and British allegiances, twenty years of 'devolving governments', widening regional disparities and the feeling of alienation as measured by the Brexit vote.

The free event, English identity, English democracy and the governance of England, takes place on Friday 9 March (4pm - 6pm) and is organised by Sheffield Hallam's Sheffield Institute for Policy Studies (SIPS). The talk will take place the University's Charles Street building.

Professor Denham served as Labour MP for Southampton Itchen from 1992 to 2015 and held a number of senior positions whilst at Westminster, notably Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.

Professor Peter Wells, co-director for SIPS, said: "We are delighted to welcome John to Sheffield Hallam and look forward to his informed thoughts on a number of highly topical and challenging areas of debate which undoubtedly touch all of our lives.

"Brexit has inescapably brought the concept of identity right to the forefront of how society operates, no matter who you are, and understanding this concept against the backdrop of democracy and governance is now absolutely crucial.
