Dr Emma Carter is a mechanical engineer (Chartered member of the IMechE) with five years experience in steel tube and automotive component manufacturing, a PhD in vehicle design for pedestrian safety and post-doctoral research experience in MEMS (Micro-electro Mechanical Systems) and station design for blast resilience and blast mitigation technology modelling. Dr Carter has been a full-time lecturer in mechanical engineering at SHU since Jan 2016.

Expertise

Research:

·         Automotive and pedestrian safety

·         Micro-electro mechanical systems (micro-resonators and the Casimir force)

·         Multibody and Finite Element Dynamic modelling

·         Blast mitigation technologies, blast-proof building design and blast containment

Teaching:

·         Engineering Design

·         Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics

Emma was selected for Specialist Factual New Talent Market at DocFest 2016: one-on-one meetings with TV Production companies and Commissioners from BBC and Discovery to discuss presenting specialist factual TV.

Funded by the Engineering Professors' Council to produce, direct and edit a series of short on-line films about Engineering aimed at young people (2014-2016). Available on 'Engenius Films' channels on Facebook and YouTube.
