Sheffield Hallam University welcomed over 2,000 students from across the country yesterday after hosting 'the biggest ever' team sports competition organised by the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS).

Over 100 teams competed in 14 different sports as part of the annual BUCS Big Wednesday tournament, with Sheffield Hallam celebrating gold medals in the women's water polo and women's basketball finals.

The day-long festival of sport saw the University host the BUCS Championship finals for rugby league, netball, basketball, squash, football, hockey, indoor cricket, tennis, lacrosse, volleyball, fencing, badminton, table-tennis and water polo.

Thanks to a partnership between Sheffield Hallam, Sheffield City Trust and BUCS, events took place at venues across the city, including Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre, Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, English Institute of Sport Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University Sports Park and Abbeydale Sports Club.

Dan Porter, head of sport services at Sheffield Hallam, said: "It was really exciting to be able to host this day of events for the UK’s top sporting universities. Sheffield Hallam is committed to and promotes sport and physical activity at all levels and thanks to the investment into our world-class sports facilities, our athletes compete in a range of sports, including some at national and international levels."
