'Making Spaces' 22/24/25 June

20 per session This architecture masterclass is suitable for students interested in learning more about a career in Architecture or Architectural Technology. The session will be based in the Architecture studios and offers a design based activity explored through both physical and digital modelling.
'Speed drawing - Drawing as a social and fine art activity' 22 June

30 per session This fine art masterclass is based around a drawing workshop which enables students to work together as a group to get to know work seen in the degree show, and each other, through the act of drawing. This is a speedy drawing process where students engage in the act of looking and responding, using ink, sticks and fingers. The aim of the workshop is to remove anxiety from the process of creating a drawing, not to be too precious about it's final outcome and to have fun in the act of making.
Teacher Training Taster Sessions 23 June

30 per session Work with staff and student specialists from our teacher training departments in one of 2 subject focussed train to teach masterclasses:
  • Train to Teach D&T (Introduction to BSc Design and Technology Education with Qualified Teacher Status)
    This masterclass will give students an insight into what and how is studied at University to become a Qualified Teacher of Design and Technology. Students will be introduced to the projects by Hallam's trainee teachers to build up subject knowledge and try some teaching in peer groups.
  • Train to Teach a STEM subject
    This masterclass will give students an opportunity to explore Teacher Training qualifications related to Science, Technology Engineering and Maths subjects taught at secondary school and routes into becoming a qualified teacher. Representatives from various departments within the university related to STEM will be available to answer questions and offer guidance, alongside participating in some hands on STEM activities.
'Future Fashion' 22 June

30 per session This fashion masterclass give students the opportunity to explore silhouette, proportion and design details within a garment. It will help students to understand and establish the foundations of designing a garment and give participants the chance to develop innovative ideas.

30 per session This graphics masterclass involves a series of activities where students will decode a client design brief, consider how to read and understand an audience, brand match to their audience and ultimately design a brand. The activities will include a semantic idea swarm, semiotic decoding - observation and insight; colour coding – starting a moodboard and type-hacking before groups presenting their ideas to each other.

30 per session The use of images to communicate, ideas, emotions and stories predates even the earliest forms of written communication. In today's digital society, understanding the role images play in everyday communication is becoming increasingly important. Being visually literate is a key skill for all Illustrators and informs an important part of their training during university studies.

This illustration masterclass will offer students the opportunity to experience what it is like to work on an illustration project and develop some of the keys skills used by Illustrators working across many exciting areas of design. This will include developing creative thinking strategies and using innovative image making techniques.
'Space, Place, Problem' - An Introduction to Interior Design' 22 June

30 per session 2052: A low-lying city has become immersed under the ever-rising sea, its river defences have broken their banks and 200,000 people are left homeless. Using their creative imagination and structural design thinking, how can Interior Designers solve this housing issue with limited resources? 2052 is an example of one of the issues students will be faced with in this interior design masterclass. The session will explore key global issues and trends driving change in our societies and markets. This session aims to raise awareness about our environment – both man-made and natural, initiating conversation and providing input for innovative solutions through group exercises. Students will take part in group activities using a range of hands on media to realise some of these social, technological, and environmental ideas in 2 & 3 dimensional outcomes.
'Body Extension' 15/16/17 June
3 hours
30 per session This metalwork and jewellery masterclass will involves responding to the structural characteristics of materials through playful problem solving and the inventive use of materials. Students will explore the use of everyday materials, and respond to a design brief to extend the body exploring exaggeration, creating volume, working with opposites and contrast, miniaturising, shrinking, expanding, inflating and defining.
'Product Design: Style Tiles' 24 June

30 per session This product design masterclass is a dynamic session using visual prompts to support students develop their design vocabulary; an important skill in becoming a designer. Aimed primarily at students studying product design but also relevant across all design disciplines.
