We are one of the UK’s leading academic groups in STEM education, with a specific focus on science, working to improve the experience of young people in school science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).
We also focus on skills, employment, and equality and diversity issues in education and the workplace.
In recent years the government has funded a massive investment in STEM education to address the longstanding problem in recruiting students into these subjects. And it’s not just about numbers. Recent STEM exam results point to major differences in terms of gender and other diversity measures. Engineering in particular continues to be a male-dominated area.
Long-term trends in young people’s attitudes to STEM subjects and careers also indicate that the recent upturn in exam entries still leaves a long way to go in terms of reaching equal levels of engagement and participation. So there's still a lot of work to do which we achieve through our wide range of activities, these include:
- research and evaluation
- curriculum development - particularly new STEM schemes
- curriculum design and development
- innovation in CPD and teacher development
- equality, diversity and widening participation
