STEM Unit

The Centre for Science Education is the regional STEMNET contract holder (2011-2015) with responsibility for managing the STEM Ambassadors Scheme as well as providing advice and guidance to all Schools in the South Yorkshire Region.

As a contract holder we have a particular responsibility for advising all schools in the region with regard to the free resources which can support schools' work in STEM. These include:

The STEM Ambassadors programme - we have over 500 volunteers available to give talks, provide activities and work with schools free of charge. These are drawn from a wide range of engineers and scientists based in the region and can support both primary and secondary schools.

To request a STEM Ambassador, please complete the form "Schools request for STEM Ambassadors," giving at least 4 weeks notice, and return to Linda Bray l.m.bray@shu.ac.uk

STEM NETWORKING - this is the national on-line forum for schools and ambassadors to link together. It is a way for schools and ambassadors to publicise interesting things that they are doing. Schools can also request ambassadors through this network.

STEM Clubs - This is the national network of clubs. On the website you will find ideas and free resources to help you set up and support a STEM club in school. These can all be accessed on the STEMNETwebsite.

In addition to this we email all Schools and colleges in South Yorkshire each month with ideas and activities. These emails are sent directly to the teachers in each school listed in our database. We also email all ambassadors monthly with requests for help from schools.

Throughout the year we are regularly visiting all secondary schools through our programme of face to face meetings. This gives schools an opportunity to discuss their needs with one of our team and find out more about developments in STEM in the region.

CREST Awards - Our team is also responsible for managing the CREST awards in the region.

For further details about CREST please contact Andy Bullough A.C.Bullough@shu.ac.uk

STEM Celebrations - The regional STEM team support and organise a number of STEM celebrations throughout the year.  This includes our very popular:

  • Christmas Lecture
  • Build It: a primary technology fun day challenge.

In addition to this the team works closely with the University of Sheffield and other partners on the Sheffield Festival of Science and Engineering which runs as part of the National Science and Engineering Week.

For further details about National Science and Engineering Week please contact, Judith Higginson j.higginson@shu.ac.uk.

We work in close partnership with bodies such Business and Education in South Yorkshire in supporting Teentech and Global Manufacturing Festival.

In order to ensure the continued improvement of the STEM Ambassadors Programme STEMNET requires your valuable feedback on the recent STEM Ambassador(s) activity that your school has been involved in. STEM Ambassadors are volunteers who give up their time ‘free of charge’ to support local schools. We need to ensure that they are sufficiently supported and prepared by our Contract Holder to support you and as such your feedback is very important to us. Your feedback will be used to assist the continuous improvement of STEMNET's programmes, including the STEM Ambassadors' Programme.

Please can you provide information on the details of the Ambassador(s) activity and whether the activity was a success for you and your students?
