Research interests/current work

Professional development of teachers:
The factors affecting how teachers achieve professional identity. Links with philosophy of practice (the theoretical framework) and education policy (which affects context), and socio/historical explorations.

Philosophy of (educational) practice:
Grounding the discussion and conceptualisations of educational practice in current philosophy and social theory of practice.

Education policy:
a) Admissions to schools, the causes and effects of segregated intakes and the relation to educational outcomes
b) The way in which local competitive arenas of schools are adapting to the reduction in LA power
c) Critical assessments of rival conceptualisations of social justice in education.

Primary and secondary schools:
Socio/historical accounts of the role of historical and discursive resources in the durable inequality between these phases.

Philosophy of Nelson Goodman:
Assessment, development and application of his concept of projection to issues in education.
