Education and schools

We have a long record of researching education and schools, and this forms a major part of our project portfolio. We have made a real difference to education policy and practice – from changing school admissions policy to helping schools conduct research and development projects.

Our research in this area focuses on two aspects of education and schools

  • policy and curriculum research covering a range of educational policy work, the key subjects of English/Literacy, Mathematics, Science and SEN, as well as cross-cutting and other curriculum studies
  • teachers' and leaders development and careers, covering the professional development, recruitment and retention of staff in the schools and wider education sectors

Example outputs, impact and public engagement

Our projects have led to a number of policy and practice seminars. We have

  • presented on Level 6 tests to the Test Development Team at the Standards and Testing Agency (2013)
  • presented to the Science Learning Centre Network international research seminar (2012)
  • been invited panellists at the Royal Academy of Engineering STEM evaluation symposium series (2011)
  • presented the key note speech to the PSHE Association conference (2011)
  • presented a symposium on the NQTQIS Early Career Teacher development project to policy makers and at the British Educational Research Association annual conference (2011)

The studies have led to policy and practice briefings on

  • evaluating STEM initiatives [link]
  • development for the whole school workforce [link]

These studies have influenced educational policy on

  • Key Stage 2 testing
  • whole school training and development
  • support for collaborative CPD in mathematics
  • the role of national centres in supporting science and mathematics CPD
