Research interests/current work

Colin's research interests are in the area of inequalities of access to higher education which he approaches through critical analyses of widening participation policies set in the context of the marketisation of higher education. He also has research interests in the related area of changing student financial support mechanisms and their impact on widening participation. A political scientist by training, Colin's PhD thesis Preparing for Government: Education policymaking in the Labour Party 1994-1999 (Department of Politics, University of Sheffield) was successfully defended in 2000.

Colin is currently working on the national evaluation of National Networks for Collaborative Outreach (2015-2017) for HEFCE and has most recently  co-directed research into the Impact of number controls, choice and competition: An analysis of the student profile and the student learning environment in the new higher education landscape (funded by an open call grant from the Higher Education Academy). He is also currently engaged in longitudinal content and discourse analyses of Access Agreements (compacts between HE institutions and the Office for Fair Access (OFFA)) to explore changing outreach and student support priorities over time  and between institution types. He is also interested in educational choice making among teenagers, having carried out various evaluations of Aimhigher intervention activities designed to raise educational aspirations among secondary school pupils. He is Director of Studies for two current PhDs in the related fields of career choice and qualification routes, and co-director of a RCT evaluation of the Think Forward intervention based on one-to-one coaching at the key Y10/Y11 stage of educational choice making.

Colin is co-convener of the High Education Special Interest Group within the British Educational Research Association (BERA) and co-editor of the academic journal Higher Education Review. He is currently co-editing a book: Marketisation, Equity and Differentiation in Higher Education, to be published by Routledge in 2016.
