The Guardian's economics editor, Larry Elliott, wrote an extensive column and news article for the newspaper about research from Sheffield Hallam University's Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (CRESR) revealing the true economic impact of the destruction of Britain's industrial cities.

The research, by Professors Christina Beatty and Steve Fothergill, demonstrated that the destruction of industrial cities and the knock-on effect is costing the Exchequer billions of pounds per year.

The research was also cited during a Business and Industrial Strategy Questions parliamentary session (watch from 11:40:06) by Chi Onwurah, Shadow Industry Minister and MP for Newcastle Central.

The story is also available on the Sheffield Hallam Media Centre.
